Xbox Live Comes to Windows 10

Microsoft aims for a unified experienceIf you have heard of Games for Windows Live (GFWL), then you are probably familiar with some of its problems. The difficulties encountered by some users had basic things like login and update the GFWL could produce epic tales of woe. GFWL was deactivated last year, and he went to his online matchmaking system, which means that games that used this service to create multiplayer sessions or had not had multiplayer or connect to anything else, as Steamworks. With the next major version of Windows coming out this year, Microsoft wants to give another shot, and fortunately they using a different set of tools, and the introduction of some exciting new features. We sat for a conference on the subject, conducted by engineers from Microsoft Vijay Gajjala and Brian Tyler.

Xbox Live Comes to Windows 10

First, the Xbox Live service on Windows 10 is being desktop native code running in a Windows 10 application, rather than a port. Tablets and phones running Windows 10 all the windows get their native applications, which in theory should result in a smoother operation. Microsoft also talks about single sign-on, so you can use a single account on all Microsoft Win10 devices to connect to XBL and the connection to the device itself. When asked about the availability of this service for previous versions of Windows, and Android devices or Max OSX, the company had no firm plans on the horizon.

Do not hold your breath. When you connect to XBL on Windows 10, you get the full experience XBL - your profile page, achievements, rankings, messages, activity feeds, game clips, privacy settings, basically anything that is exposed to an Xbox a user. There is a "Game DVR" where you can record gameplay and upload it for playback on other devices connected to XBL. (And in case you have not heard, you can play games Xbox ONE to your PC and play there.)Regarding Microsoft, there is no difference between what Xbox One users can do and see, and users of this PC can do and see when you are logged on XBL. Microsoft also adds a Twitter-like feature where users can follow, rather than requiring a friend request agreed to see activity from another XBL player. This can be disabled in your privacy settings if you wish.Windows 10 developers who want to use XBL now get access to a fancy telemetry system. In a word, a dev can mark certain player activities such as the acquisition of a specific weapon, charging a particular level, or complete a ride in a racing game, and these events uploaded to a "stats engine "in the Microsoft cloud. It is used to treat the achievements, but the data can be aggregated and analyzed to better understand how people play the game so you can answer questions like:.? "Is this boss fight too hard" or " Is it some secret room * too * secret? "The data flow is an optional service that developers can subscribe or ignore.Devs also have access to the Windows Dev Center, which is a desktop client that they can do things like add a challenge to the game (limited achievement over time), or create a ranking for a specific activity, such as fatalities wicked or the number of explosions caused. These things can be organized on a test server before being published live, to detect problems before they are published online. In a session separate but closely related GDC led by Ferdinand Schober, a software development engineer at Microsoft as we gleaned some details on multiplayer cross-platform. Session data is stored in the Microsoft cloud, so it will be hard to misplace. As GFWL, Microsoft will manage matchmaking on its own servers, and developers can find the setting of the player's skill varies to search, and how long the search to match before expanding its search area a notch. As the Xbox One, invitations and join current are also dealt with a universal interface, rather than interfaces or game-personalized notifications. This stuff is not available in the Windows 10 Technical Preview yet, but it's never too early to get familiar with the next Microsoft's flagship operating system. Win10 will be free for Windows 7 and 8 users anyway, in the first 12 months of its availability (after you pay a fee of time as usual, no sales charge that some had feared). We are eager to get their hands on it.
